Bernd Franke

Bernd Franke has been working in the newspaper industry for over 35 years. After receiving his Photo-Journalism certificate from Conestoga College in 1977, Bernd began his career as a reporter working for several Ontario local newspapers. His resume includes time spent in Guelph, Timmins, and Kirkland Lake. In 1997 he began working for the Welland Tribune, and in 2000 was named the paper’s Sports Editor. A dedicated community writer, Bernd’s philosophy regarding the coverage of local sport has always been that in a local paper, minor sport deserves major league attention. Since taking over the sports desk at the Welland Tribune, Bernd has never thought twice about replacing a professional sport story with one from the local area. Bernd has consistently displayed a passion and commitment to Niagara College Intercollegiate Athletics, and has been instrumental in raising the profile of the Knights across the Niagara Region. As of 2013, Bernd has received the OCAA Media Award on seven occasions in recognition of his outstanding coverage of OCAA sport.
