RECAP: Men's volleyball continue hot stretch with wins over weekend opponents

The Niagara Knights men's volleyball program (7-4, 4th OCAA West) picked up two victories over the weekend against the Boreal Viperes and the Cambrian Golden Shield. The Knights have now won their last three matches, but more impressively, have won seven out of their last eight.

In Saturday's matchup against Boreal, the Knights got out to a quick start, taking down their oponnent in the first set 25-18. That momentum was all they needed as they closed out the next two sets, both by a score of 25-20, to close out the 3-0 win in their first match of 2019.

Knights head coach Tommy Sloan was impressed with the way his team played, especially since they were shorthanded due to injuries.

"It was nice to see some other players step up and contribute for us," said Sloan. "We got some great serving and back row play from Nicholas Buckborough (London) late in all three sets that kept things from getting too close."

Heading to Cambrian on Sunday to take on the Golden Shield, the Knights got out to a similar start, winning the first set 25-18 and the second set 26-24. Cambrian battled back in the third set, however, putting an end to the Knights run by winning the set 27-25. Ultimately, the Knights would win in four sets by taking the last one 25-18 once again.

"All things considered I think we made progess towards the type of team we want to be this semester," said Sloan. "The guys showed great resiliency with only nine players dressed the entire weekend."

Ashton Fehr (Leamington) and Elijah Bugiardini (Hamilton) led the way for the Knights against Boreal with seven points each.

Against Cambrian on Sunday, Jaydon Milne (Toronto) was a force, registering 15 kills while Ben Fillmore (Port Dover) had a great day helping out his teammates as he dished out 40 assists.

The Knights will host the Sheridan Bruins (4-7, 7th OCAA West) at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre on Thursday, January 17th at 8pm. Admission is free for all students.
