Student-Athletes Launch Niagara College Knights Chivalry Program

The Niagara College department of athletics and recreation is pleased to announce the launch of the Niagara College Knights Chivalry program. The Knights Chivalry program is an initiative championed by the newly formed and student driven Niagara College student-athlete leadership team.

The student-athlete leadership team is a student-athlete driven initiative designed to provide current student-athletes with an opportunity to have a voice in the Niagara College intercollegiate athletics program.

The Knights Chivalry program is the first initiative undertaken by the group, and will see the six Niagara College varsity teams support local community-based organizations.

The Knights Chivalry program formally gets underway on November 15th when the men’s and women’s volleyball programs open their winter clothing drive in support of the Central Community Church in St. Catharines. Anyone who donates a piece of winter clothing during the Knights’ volleyball home games on November 15, 16, and 21 will receive free admission.

Additionally clothing donation boxes will be kept at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre for anyone wishing to donate addition pieces of used winter wear.

“A holiday season winter clothing drive is a great and worthwhile initiative” said Niagara College men’s volleyball team captain Steve Stone. “We chose to support the Central Community Church because keeping people warm during our cold winters is important. We decided as student-athletes that we can play a role in supporting this cause, so it was a natural fit.”

The men’s volleyball program will also be responsible for handing out all collected winter wear on Saturday, November 22nd at 202 Church St. in St. Catharines. Doors are open from 9:00am -1:00pm and anyone in need of winter wear is welcome to drop by.

The Niagara College men’s and women’s basketball programs will conduct a new toy drive in support of The Hope Centre in Welland. Toys will be collected until Friday, December 5th at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre reception desk.

“Our team has been active in the community for a few years” added fourth-year women’s basketball team captain Miranda Ross. “When the student-athlete leadership team formed, everyone seemed really eager to focus on working in the community. Our team selected The Hope Centre because it’s a great organization that really supports the Welland community, and hopefully the toys donated will help brighten someone’s holiday season.”

Additionally, during the Knights home basketball games on Thursday, November 20th new toys will be accepted upon entry. Spectators donating toys will receive free admission.

The Niagara College men’s and women’s soccer programs will be a part of the Knights Chivalry program as the teams will support the Pelham Cares Food Drive. The Knights will spend Saturday, December 6th using their hands instead of their feet, filling food donation boxes for Pelham Cares.

This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the annual Pelham Cares Food Drive.
