The Niagara Knights men's golf team wrapped up Day 1 of the Canadian University/College Golf Championship tied for 5th place. Tabulated by combining the top four scores out of five golfers, the men finished with a cumulative 12-over 301.
The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds opened up a big lead over the field during the first round, holding a 20 shot advantage heading into the second round. Cumulatively the Thunderbirds shot a 10-under 278. However, the Knights only sit three strokes back of the Camosun Chargers and Queen's Gaels, who sit tied in second place at 298.
Individually, Josiah Dixon (Bognor) led the way for the Knights, firing a 1-under 71. Dixon sits tied for fifth in the men's draw heading into the second round. Evan Littlefield (Thunder Bay) shot a 1-over 73 and finds himself tied for 15th. Rounding out the Knights on Day 1 were Mark Wikkerink (Trenton) with a 77, Nick Schepens (London) with an 80, and Logan Lammerant (Seaforth) with an 83.
On the women's side Lorelle Weavers (Burlington) shot a 12-over 84 and finds herself tied for 21st. Weavers will kick things off for the Knights on Day 2 with a 12:30pm EST tee-off. The men will take to the course at 4:20pm EST, with Nick Schepens leading things off.
The Knights will look to climb the standings and put themselves into a strong position heading into the tournament's cut-day. Following Thursday's third round, the field will be reduced to the top 10 men's teams and top six women's teams, in addition to any individuals within 15 shots of the lead.
