RECAP: Knights, Littlefield capture gold at Knights Fall Classic

RECAP: Knights, Littlefield capture gold at Knights Fall Classic

It would be a safe to say that Hunters Point Golf Course truly provides a home course advantage for the Niagara Knights golf team. For the third straight tournament at the course, the Knights captured the men's team and individual championships. This follows up their victory at last year's Knights Fall Classic and the 2015 OCAA Championship, hosted at the course. On the men's side the first six holes from each nine were counted, as not all men were able to complete a full 18 holes as play was suspended due to darkness. The women, who teed off earlier in the day, were able to complete the entire tournament.

In the shortened event, Evan Littlefield (Thunder Bay) captured the men's individual title. He was the low golfer on the Knights team who also captured the men's team championship at the event. For the 12 holes that were counted, which equate to a par of 48, Littlefield shot a three-under 45. Teammate Josiah Dixon (Bognor) recorded a one-under 47 to finish in a three-way tie for second place. Ben Kenel (Hamilton) and Logan Lammerant (Seaforth) rounded out the scoring for the Knights, shooting 48 and 49 respectively. Cumlatively the Knights recorded a 189, defeating the second place Georgian Grizzlies by a full 10 strokes. Brett Shewchuk (Thunder Bay), Nick Schepens (London), and Austin Golding (Dunnville) rounded out the scoring for Niagara, recording scores of 51, 54, and 56 respectively.

On the women's side the Humber Hawks captured the team title with a cumulative score of 160, narrowly edging the Georgian Grizzlies in a tiebreak. Brock's Shannon Rowan shot an impressive 73 to take home the women's individual title, surpassing Georgian's Addison Wallwin by five strokes. Lorelle Weavers (Burlington) shot an 82 to finish in 5th place.

A day prior to their home event, the Knights took part in the Brock Badgers Invitational at Sawmill Golf Course in Fenwick. The men's team took home the tournament's bronze medal, scoring 307, behind the University of Guelph and University of Waterloo. Josiah Dixon was the low scorer for the Knights, recording a 4-over 75. Lorelle Weavers finished in third place, posting a round of 80 on a course with tough greens and difficult pin placement.

Niagara's next tournament will be the OCAA Championship at National Pines GC in Barrie, on October 3rd to 5th. The Knights men are the defending team champions, while Evan Littlefield and Lorelle Weavers are the defending male and female gold medallists. In addition Josiah Dixon captured the bronze medal at last year's event.
