Latham & Currie named athletes of the week

Female Athlete of the Week – Kara Latham, Women's Soccer

Kara Latham (Welland) of the Niagara Knights women's soccer program (1-0-1, 2nd OCAA Central) has been named this week's Niagara College female athlete of the week. The first year Pre-Health Sciences student earns the award for the first time in her young Knights career.

In their only contest of the week, Latham scored the lone goal as the Knights recorded a 1-1 draw against the visiting UTM Eagles (0-1-1, 4th OCAA Central) on September 14th. All the more impressive was her resolve throughout the match. Prior to her game tying strike in the 86th minute, Latham was twice forced to leave the pitch to deal with a bleeding nose. Hit by a ball in the first half and an elbow while jumping for a header, she headed to the sideline to be tended to be the trainers before returning to play on each occasion.

The Knights will return to the pitch on Tuesday, September 20th when they travel to Toronto to take on the Humber Hawks (2-0, 1st OCAA Central). Niagara will return home on Sunday, September 25th to welcome the Sheridan Bruins (1-0-1, 2nd OCAA Central) to Youngs Sportsplex, with kickoff scheduled for 6pm. Admission is free for all spectators.

Male Athlete of the Week – Andrew Currie, Men's Soccer

Andrew Currie (Woodstock) of the Niagara Knights men's soccer program (1-1, 3rd OCAA Central) has been named this week's Niagara College male athlete of the week. Currie was the spark in the Knights victory over the visiting UTM Eagles (0-2, 5th OCAA Central) on September 14th.

The third year Fitness and Health Promotion student scored his first career OCAA goal against the Eagles. Currie volleyed a header off a set piece from teammate Jordi Amores (Niagara Falls) to open the scoring in the 13th minute of the contest. In addition to his goal, Currie was a steadfast defender throughout the match, winning a number of contested balls and being a calming presence throughout. Currie and his teammates held the Eagles to just two shots on net, resulting in a 2-0 victory for Niagara.

Currie and the Knights are back at it on Tuesday, September 20th when they travel to Toronto to take on the defending CCAA National Champion Hawks (2-0, 1st OCAA Central). They will return to Welland on September 25th for a contest against the Sheridan Bruins (1-1, 3rd OCAA Central) beginning at 8pm. Admission is free for all spectators.
