WELLAND, ON: The Niagara Knights curling program hosted an OCAA invitational tournament at the Welland Curling Club on Friday, January 24th. Four different institutions travelled to the Rose City for the invitational event that saw play in 3 different divisions – men's, women's, and mixed doubles. Each team that travelled for the competition had the opportunity to play 3 games in preparation for the upcoming OCAA Championships, being hosted by Mohawk College at the Dundas Valley Golf and Country Club from February 5 to 9, 2025.
This is the first year in a long time that Niagara has had a full complement of teams, sending a men's, women's, and two mixed doubles teams to the 2025 OCAA Curling Championships. The new crew of curling coaches have been working hard at recruiting, running events such as indoor floor curling tournaments and recruiting showcases to build their report within the Welland and surrounding communities.
The Knights men's team had the most successful day, completing the 3-0 sweep taking down Fanshawe College, Fleming College, as well as a high school men's all-star team that attended to fill out the field. The women's program won their first two match ups beating Fleming College and Mohawk College but were faced with a tough opponent in the Fanshawe College women's team and ultimately dropped their final game of the day. The two mixed doubles teams had a quieter day as they only played two games and went a combined 1-3 on the day.
The teams have a couple of weeks to rest, practice, and prepare for the OCAA Curling Championship, which will be the first OCAA provincial championship experience for most of the players.
