NORTH YORK, ONT: The Niagara College men's soccer team (4-4-4) made the trip around Lake Ontario to take on the Humber Hawks (12-0) in the OCAA quarter-final match on Saturday afternoon. Woefully, the Knights suffered a 5-0 defeat, ending their 2025 soccer season.
The Knights came out of the gate pressing, trying to keep the Hawks on their heels to begin the game. Unfortunately, the Hawks were able to push through Niagara's attack early in the match and open the scoring in the fourth minute. The Knights composed themselves and fended off the Hawks for the majority of the first half, before watching them slide in a second goal on a penalty kick – taking a 2-0 deficit into the half. The Knights' chance at a comeback was quickly put to rest early in the second half as Humber put their 3rd goal into the back of the net and scoring twice more later on in the half.
"It was a disappointing end to a good turn-around season – a negative turn of events put us in a deep hole against a good team and before we could dig ourselves out, we found ourselves down 2-0," said Frank DeChellis, head coach of the Niagara Knights. DeChellis continued to say that "the guys worked as hard as they have all season long and did not give up, and that made us proud. We said goodbye to 13 players today as this was their last game as a Knight – the last whistle is always a difficult moment, but it does signal the start of the 2026 campaign."
The loss ends the Knights' season as they exit the OCAA playoffs in the quarter-final round. As they turn their heads towards the 2026 season, they are filled with optimism as they continue to get better and climb the standings each year.
