PREVIEW: Knights set sights on win column against Saints and Lions

The Niagara Knights women's soccer program (0-1, 6th OCAA West) will hit the road and travel to Southwest to take on a pair of OCAA West foes. The Knights will be looking for their first win of the season after dropping their season opener 3-0 to the Mohawk Mountaineers (2-0, 2nd OCAA West).

The first stop on the trip will be Amherstburg where the Knights will play the St. Clair Saints (1-1, 3rd OCAA West). The Saints opened their season with a 2-1 win against the Redeemer Royals (0-2, 4th OCAA West) but later dropped a 3-0 decision to the OCAA West powerhouse Fanshawe Falcons (3-0, 1st OCAA West).

For the second match of the weekend road trip, Niagara will make a stop In Sarnia to play the Lambton Lions (0-2, 4th OCAA West. The Lions have struggles out the gate, as they have lost their first two matches by a total score of 20-0.

Knights' Head Coach, Rob Lalama, says his team needs to step up and improve on their performance from the season opener.

"Our work ethic needs to be better," said Lalama. "We need to pressure better when we don't have possession, and we need to support the ball better when we do have possession."

The Knights will look to get more production out of their newly-shaped forward group consisting of rookies Sophia Al-Kayed (St. Catharines) and Katelyn Mix (Gilford), as well as the Knights' top scorer from a year ago and the reigning OCAA West Rookie of the Year, Michelle Maecker (Fonthill).

"We worked on correcting our mistakes in practice this week," said Lalama. "I am curious to see what the women will bring to the matches this weekend."

A season ago, the Knights went 2-2 against their upcoming opponents, dropping both of their decisions against the Saints, but picking up two of their season's four victories against the Lions.

The Niagara Knights will take on the St. Clair Saints at the Libro Centre in Windsor, Ontario on Saturday, September 15th at 2pm before travelling to Sarnia to take on the Lampton Lions on Sunday, September 16th at 1pm.
