Niagara Knights women’s volleyball conquer the Mountaineers

November 25, 2023

The Niagara Knights played host in the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre at the Welland Campus to the Mohawk Mountaineers. Improving their season record to 6-3, they defeated the Mountaineers 3-1 (Set scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-15 and 25-20).

Head Coach Elaine Pilgrim-Susi had this to say when asked about what players stepped up in their big win: "We had great work by our middle's today, Montanna [Taylor] of course is always stellar out there, but our player of the game today for dominating at the net was Sam Cormier."

Sam Cormier, the St. Catharines native, was a key factor as Pilgrim-Susi said racking up 10 kills, a team-high 7 blocks and 5 digs. She brought a ton of support to the team from both her play on the court as well as her energy in the huddle. Another St. Catharines native, who also had a great game, Montanna Taylor, filled the box score with 9 kills, 11 assists, 4 service aces and 13 digs.

Hamilton native, Rachael Bickford, seemed to step up big against her hometown college Mohawk, racking up 23 assists, along with 2 service aces and 4 digs.

Pilgrim-Susi was asked about how pivotal the third set was and stated "We wanted to establish the dominance right away, we wanted to come out intense. We knew we had a job to do, we stayed with our game plan, and when we follow what we set out to do we can be successful. They proved that to themselves today by executing that game plan."

The Knights travel to the home of undefeated Humber College this Thursday, November 30 to try to secure another victory in their final road game before the winter break.
