OCAA hands out men's soccer awards

Thursday, October 23rd saw the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) formally open the 2014 Belairdirect OCAA men’s soccer championship with the annual awards banquet. The event recognizes the OCAA elite, and over 140 guests were in attendance at the event hosted by Niagara College at the Riverstone Event Centre in Welland, Ontario.

The event highlight was the presentations of the evenings top awards including player of the year, rookie of the year, coach of the year, and the announcement of Ontario’s 2014-15 CCAA Men’s Soccer All-Canadians.

The 2014 OCAA player of the year award went to Stephane Emard of the Algonquin Thunder (Ottawa). The third-year midfielder enjoyed an outstanding campaign for the CCAA’s top-ranked team. He served as an anchor for his team that allowed an OCAA low two goals against. Emard will serve as the OCAA nominee for the 2014 CCAA Player of the Year award that will be announced at the National Championship being hosted by Sheridan.

The 2014 OCAA rookie of the year award went to Raheem Edwards of the Sheridan Bruins (Edwards). Edwards served as an offensive catalyst for the Bruins in 2014. In eight games, the Toronto native recorded seven goals, and finished second on a Bruins team that led the OCAA in scoring with 29 tallies.

The coach of the year award went to the Mike Baraslievski of the St. Clair Saints. The 23 year veteran led the Saints to a record of 5-1-2, including an impressive 3-2 road victory over the Sheridan Bruins on October 4th. The Saints advanced to the OCAA quarterfinals before being eliminated by the Durham Lords.

The 2014 CCAA All-Canadian selections went to Algonquin’s Emard, and OCAA Scoring Champion David Velastegui.

The event served as the opening of the 2014 Belairdirect OCAA Men’s Soccer Championship being hosted by Niagara College from October 24-25 at Youngs SportsPlex.

The Friday, October 24th semi-final matchups will see the Algonquin Thunder take on the Sheridan Bruins at 11:00pm, while the Durham Lords will take on the Humber Hawks at 2:00pm.
