Strong fourth quarter propels Mountaineers to victory

The Mohawk Mountaineers got off to a rocky start, but it was a strong finish that moved the Knights onto the OCAA semi-final. Mohawk defeated the Lambton Lions 64-40 on Thursday night at the OCAA Championships.

Through the game’s first three quarters the Mountaineers scored only 28 points. The fourth quarter was another story, as Mohawk’s shooters came alive to record a blistering 36 points in the frame. The Lions, who held a two-point lead entering the fourth, were unable to keep up and ultimately succumbed to the lofty Mohawk attack.

Mohawk was led by OCAA First-Team All-Star JenJen Abella, who received player of the game honours. Abella scored a game-high 16 points and added five assists and three rebounds. Stef Hrymak, 14 points, and Shanien O’Neill, 11 points, were the other two Mountaineers who reached double-digits in the contest. Careena Browne posted 14 rebounds for Mohawk.

Melissa Ellis was the Lambton player of the game, recording 13 points and nine rebounds. Christine Fleischer added nine points and a game high 17 rebounds. The Lions will now have the tough task of facing the hometown Knights in the consolation semi-final.
