Hawks continue bid for back-to-back championships, defeat Fanshawe

The Humber Hawks bid to repeat as OCAA champions took one more step forward on Friday afternoon. The Hawks cruised to a 71-49 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons to advanced to Saturday’s gold medal game.

The defending champs got off to a slow start, scoring only 11 points in the first quarter. However they ramped up the intensity in the second quarter with 27 points to the Falcons 15. Humber led by 20 at the halftime break. The relentless attack would continue through the third quarter, with Humber extending their lead to 34 at the end of the third quarter. The Falcons would reduce the game in the fourth, outscoring the Hawks 20-8 but it was too late as Humber finished with a 22 point victory.

Atissa Cronk was dominant for the Hawks in the first half en route to the big lead. She was five of six from the field, and six of seven from the charity stripe. Her 16 first half points, combined with an additional five in the second, was enough to earn her player of the game honours.

OCAA player of the year Ceejay Nofuente had another stellar game for Humber, demonstrating why she is the best player in Ontario. The shifty guard controlled the play throughout and recorded 15 points, six rebounds, and fives steals in the contest. Llyandra Kerr also recorded double digit points for the second consecutive game, contributed 15 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.

Anique Daley earned player of the game honours for the Falcons. She recorded 10 points and three steals in the losing effort. Laura Vere also hit double digits for the Falcons, registering 10 points and eight assists.

Humber will now await the winner of the second semi-final between the Mohawk Mountaineers and Algonquin Thunder, Saturday at 7:00pm. Meanwhile, the Falcons will have a date with the loser of the aforementioned semi-final, Saturday at 5:00pm. Both games will be streamed live at goknights.ca/watchlive
