Mountaineers move one step closer to the pinnacle with overtime victory

Day saved all the theatrics for the final buzzer. The Mohawk Mountaineers used a second half comeback, and a late free throw, to eclipse the Algonquin Thunder 88-87 to advance to the OCAA championship for the second consecutive year. The Mountaineers victory sets up a championship rematch from last season, where the Mohawks fell 61-41 to the Humber Hawks.

Trailing by 14 at the halftime break, the Mountaineers used a strong second half to force overtime. With 1.4 seconds on the clock Shanien O’Neill stepped to the line with a pair of free throw attempts to take the lead. JenJen Abella earned player of the game honours for the second consecutive day on the strength of 20 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, and four steals. Stef Hrymak scored 21 points, with four rebounds and three assists. O’Neill scored 19 points and collected nine boards for the Mountaineers.

For Algonquin Childerah Obiahuba, the OCAA east defensive player of the year, earned player of the game honours. She recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds on the evening. Jeylinh Bui also recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the game.

This is now the third consecutive season the Mountaineers have made the final. In addition to the loss to Humber last season, they also dropped a 76-65 decision to Algonquin in the 2014 gold medal game.
