Canada’s top youth volleyball players to descend on Niagara College

A collection of Canada's top volleyball players will descend on Niagara College's Welland campus athletic centre on June 11 and 12 for the Under-18 Canadian Youth National Team East Selection Camp.

The selection camp features the top youth volleyball players from Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritime Provinces. The camp is one of two that is used as part of the selection process for the Canadian Youth National Team. The first camp was held in Calgary on May 28 and 29 and featured a collection of players from Western Canada. Athletes selected to the National Team will travel to Langley, BC to take part in a training camp from July 10-17. From there the team will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to compete in the USA High Performance Championship from July 18-24.

The two day camp will consist of four on-court sessions, physical testing, and training on Team Canada systems and high performance athlete development. Niagara Knights head coach Nathan Groenveld will serve as an assistant coach for the Youth National Team. Groenveld is looking forward to welcoming Canada's brightest young volleyball stars to the Niagara Knights' home court.

"We are excited to host some of the top U18 volleyball players in the country," Groenveld said of the camp. "It is an excellent opportunity to showcase our world class facilities and welcome the Volleyball Canada community into our home. It should be a fantastic couple of days of competition."

Featuring 15,825 square feet of hardwood court space, the gymnasium at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre is the home to Niagara College's intercollegiate varsity sport program. The court features a pair of FIVB regulation courts, as well as four varsity change rooms, a coaches' room, and athletic therapy centre.
