Knights Curlers Bring Home Hardware from OCAA Championships

The Niagara College Knights men's and women's curling team have earned the College's first two OCAA medals of the the 2021-2022 season.

Niagara's women's team finished with an impressive 4-2 record through round robin play at the 2022 OCAA Curling Championships hosted by Sault College. Niagara's 4-2 record earned them second seed at the tournament, buying them a spot in the semi-final round where they faced the third place Fanshawe Falcons. The ladies easily took the semi-final game with a 8-1 win over the Falcons to advance to the gold medal game against Humber College Sunday morning.

The Knights ladies battled hard till the end, but unfortunately fell 8-6 to the defending champion Humber Hawks.

The Knights men's team played to a 3-2 record through round robin play Their fourth place finish earned them a spot in the semi-finals where they took on the first place Humber Hawks. The blue and white were unable capture the win against the Hawks to advance to the gold medal final, but earned a shot at the bronze against Confederation College.

Sunday's bronze medal game saw the Knights dominate Confederation, earning a 10-2 win in five ends, and capturing bronze on the men's side of the championship.

Along with the silver and bronze medals, the Knights curlers brought home more accolades for the program.

First-Team Championship All-Stars included Niagara vice Kyle Henry (Elmira, Ont.), while Nathan Lohnes (Halifax, N.S.) and Adam Rolson (Kitchener, Ont.) were named Second-Team Championship All-Stars in the men's competition.

First-Team Championship All-Stars on the women's side included Niagara vice Alexa Desrochers (Welland, Ont.) and Second-Team Championship All-Stars included skip Melissa Borowski (Welland, Ont.), and Niagara lead Emma Hill (Dundalk, Ont.).

The Knight's men were also awarded the Ron Fearon men's fair play trophy for their display of good sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
