RECAP: NC Wraps Up 2014-15 Extramural Sports Season

The 2014-15 campus recreation season saw Niagara College formally compete in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association extramural competition for the first time since 2008.

NC fielded teams in OCAA Extramural Volleyball and Basketball tournaments which saw 25 students given the opportunity to represent Niagara College at events held at Humber, Centennial, and the University of Toronto-Mississauga.

Extramural sports in the OCAA are designed to give students an opportunity to compete on behalf of their member institutions in tournaments and events across the province of Ontario in a competitive and fun environment. Sports include ice hockey, cricket, dodgeball, flag football, volleyball, basketball and many others.

The level of competition is typically higher than that found in campus based intramural sports, but requires less time commitment and dedication than competition at the Varsity sport level.

The 2014-15 Niagara College extramural teams were selected based on two days of tryouts in late September.

The extramural volleyball team was coached by Dan Mrowiec and Kayde Bailey, both are current members of the Niagara College men’s and women’s varsity volleyball programs. The extramural basketball team was coached by the Niagara College Knights men’s basketball program assistant coaches Elliot Etherington and Grace Lokole.

The teams practiced twice a week for up to two hours per session with practices being held at both the Niagara-on-the-Lake and Welland Campuses.

“This was a fantastic first-step for extramural programming at Niagara College” said Jenna Wilson, NC’s campus recreation coordinator. “Our campus recreation program is designed to provide students with a variety of recreational experiences. Our two extramural teams this year gave 25 students an opportunity to further live their knightslife!”

The basketball extramural team competed on November 14th at the University of Toronto-Mississauga in an event that saw them win the consolation championship, and in a second tournament on November 28th at Humber College.

The volleyball team travelled to Centennial on November 28th, and also finished in third place at the Humber College event contested on January 30th.

“Moving forward the growth and development of extramural programming will be a staple of the Niagara College campus recreation program” said Niagara College director of athletics and recreation Matthew Davies. “The reintroduction of extramural sports allows members of our student body to experience what it feels like to represent, and compete on behalf of, Niagara College across the province of Ontario.”
