Sixth Annual Niagara College Soccer Showcase Set to Kick Off Tuesday Evening

Monday, June 10, 2019...WELLAND - Tuesday, June 11th will see the Niagara College men's and women's soccer programs play host to the sixth annual Niagara Region High School Soccer showcase at Youngs SportsPlex in Welland. The event will see more than 80 of the area's best high school soccer players representing 22 Niagara Region schools come together for a pair of best-on-best games designed to showcase the high talent level that exists in the local high school soccer ranks.

"This event continues to strengthen our relationship with the Niagara high school soccer scene." says Niagara College head soccer coach, Frank Dechellis.  "This year we are supported by students in our Sports Management program which adds an academic component to the showcase. I am looking forward to Tuesday night."

The event will feature a girls' game at 6:00pm and boys' game following at 8:00pm. The two games will be played on the indoor field at Youngs SportsPlex in Welland, and will feature free admission for all community members.

The annual June showcase games were created back in 2014 by long-time Knights assistant coach Rino Berardi.

"This event was originally created as an opportunity to provide local soccer fans a chance to see all the best soccer players in the Niagara Region playing one game" says Berardi.

The format for the Niagara Region High School Soccer showcase sees each local area high school soccer program invited to send their participants of their choosing to the event. Players are split evenly into two rosters, with MVP award winners being selected from each team at the end of the match.

"This will be my fourth showcase with Niagara College and each year I am more anxious for the event to take place" said Niagara College women's soccer head coach, Rob Lalama. "The caliber and skill of the players keeps improving and the selection process is more difficult because the talent pool keeps improving. Rino works tirelessly ensuring that all players are scouted so we don't miss anyone"

Over the last six years, the Showcase has proved to live up to its potential, having seen many of the game participants continue their competitive soccer careers at Niagara College.  In total 30 past, present Knights have participated in the annual showcase event. Leone, Marc Andre Boucher, James D'Annunzio, Fiore Costa, Mike Dagg, Kimbel Donyare, Jake Therrien, Tyler Stranges, Alex Latham, Frankie Scerbo, Oti Frigole, Nick Pringle, Dean Miller, Noah DiEgidio, Jake Casciano, Hayden Ladeceur, Patrick Ioanidis, Michelle Maecker, Sarah Robert, Emily Crowley, Kelsey Synder, Sam Macsai, Lauren Frasca, Kara Latham, Sophia Al-Kayed, Kaitlyn Pressley, Genny Frick, Terin Hultink, Madi Crowe-O'Brien and Hailey Gowel.
