RECAP: Curling wrap up day two on playoff brink

RECAP: Curling wrap up day two on playoff brink

Both of the Niagara Knights curling teams will need to earn wins tomorrow if they want to advance to the playoff rounds on Sunday.  The top four in each division will advance and both the men's and women's teams find themselves right on the brink of advancing. The women finished day two in fourth place, while the men find themselves in fifth.

It was a rebound day for the men, who entered play with an 0-2 record. The Knights dropped their first match to the Sault Cougars 11-2. However, they would rebound to earn a pair of victories to move themselves to an overall record 2-3 on the week. Niagara earned an 8-2 victory over the host Confederation Thunderhawks. The Knights earned points in seven of eight ends in the match en route to the victory. The Knights would cap off the day with a close 7-6 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons.

The Knights men will end round robin play with a match against Fleming Knights followed by the St. Clair Saints. The Knights find themselves one game behind both the Fanshawe Falcons and Mohawk Mountaineers in the standings, and will need to pass at least one of them on day three to advance into the playoff round.

It was a different day for the women, who dropped both of their matches on the tournament's second day. Niagara gave up three points in the first end to the Fanshawe Falcons and were unable to close the gap, eventually losing 8-5. In their second game of the day the Knights fell 7-2 to the host Confederation Thunderhawks.

Niagara now find themselves alone in fourth place entering the final day of round robin play. The Knights have one game remaining on Saturday. A win will guarantee the Knights a spot in the semi-final, while a loss could place them in a tiebreaking scenario with the Humber Hawks.
