RECAP: Knights come up short at OCAA Curling Championships

The Niagara Knights women's curling team came heartbreakingly close to bringing home a bronze medal from the 2016 OCAA Curling Championship this past weekend. The women's team ultimately finished fourth in the tournament, while their counterparts on the men's side finished seventh.

The Knights women finished the round robin with a 2-3 record, which was good enough to earn fourth place and a berth in the semi-finals. However, the Knights would run up against the eventual champion Seneca Sting. Niagara dropped a 7-3 decision and would settle for a date with the host Confederation Thunderhawks in the Bronze medal game. Unfortunately it was not to be for the Knights, who dropped a heartbreaking 7-6 game in extra ends.

On the men's side of the draw, the Knights were unable to advance to the semi-final round. After finishing day two with consecutive wins the Knights were unable to capitalize on that momentum heading into the final day of the round robin. Niagara would find themselves on the losing end of a 10-2 game against the Fleming Knights and a 9-7 match with the St. Clair Saints. Ultimately the Knights would finish the round robin with a record of 2-5 for a seventh place finish in the event.

Although they did not bring home the team hardware, three Knights return home with individual awards. Women's skip Megan Droog (Harriston) and second Samantha Lees (St. Thomas) were both named OCAA second-team all-stars for their efforts this season. In addition head coach Jordan Thin was named OCAA coach of the year.
