Medal Contenders Set For OCAA Championships

February 10, 2023 ...WELLAND, Ont. - The dozen teams who will be competing for medals has been determined at the 2023 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Curling Championships.

The bonspiel which consists of mixed doubles, men's and women's team competitions is being hosted by Niagara College at the Welland Curling Club in Welland, Ont., and will end on Saturday.

The Niagara's women's rink, led by skip Melissa Borowski (Welland), used home ice to its advantage with a perfect 4-0 round robin record. The Knights will be joined by Humber (3-1), Sault (2-2) and Fanshawe (1-3) in the semi-finals. Fleming (0-4) was eliminated from the competition.

On the men's side Mohawk, skipped by skip Jacob Jones (Brantford), also had a perfect 4-0 round robin record. The Mountaineers will be joined in the semi-finals by Fleming, Humber and Sault with all three teams tying with 2-2 records. Fanshawe (0-4) will not move onto the medal rounds.

In mixed doubles, the Niagara-1 team and Humber finished tied atop the standings with 4-1 records, with Niagara-1 winning the tiebreaker as a result of Thursday's 8-7 win in their head-to-head match-up. They will be joined in the semi-finals by Mohawk (3-2) and Confederation-1 (2-3). Confederation-2 (1-4) and Niagara-2 (1-4) will not advance.

The semi-finals will take place Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by bronze medal games at 1 p.m. and the gold medal matches at 5 p.m. Mohawk is the defending men's and mixed champions, while Humber is the reigning women's gold medalist.

The top men's and women's teams will advance to the 2023 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association/Curling Canada College Championships taking place in Sudbury, Ont., from Mar. 15-19.
