For the first time in five seasons, the Niagara College women's basketball program had advanced to the OCAA Championship. Heading into the provincial tournament as the no. 8 seed, the Knights had a tough quarter-final matchup against the no.1 seed, Humber Hawks.
Getting off to a slow start, the Knights fell behind quickly in the first quarter. Multiple turnovers and fouls were the theme in the first half for Niagara, as they trailed Humber 33-23.
The second half began with the Knights changing their defensive set-up. The change helped, forcing Humber to take tough shots. Niagara was able to cut in the lead but could not overcome the deficit, as they fell 64-58.
Even though the Knights lost, head coach Mike Beccaria said the student-athletes should be proud of their performance. "This was by far our best game against Humber all season," said coach Beccaria. "These players deserve all the credit."
2014-15 OCAA Rookie of the Year Courtney McPherson (Welland) was named player of the game in the loss. Courtney had a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Fifth year forward Kaitlyn McPherson (Welland) also recorded a team-high 17 points.
The loss eliminates the Knights from winning a gold or silver medal, however three consecutive wins will secure Niagara a bronze medal. The Knights will now play the loser of Algonquin College (15-1, 2nd East) and St. Clair College (12-6, 3rd West) on March 6th. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.
