Robert Ellis and the Niagara Knights men’s golf team made a run for a CCAA medal on the final day of competition at the 2012 PING CCAA Golf National Championships here at the Oshawa Golf & Curling Club. The Knights had their best round of the three round championships when they shot a team low 298 which was just one stroke behind Georgian College (Barrie) who had the best round in the field. Niagara was sitting alone in third once they completed their round and had finished an hour before the final group reached the clubhouse. The final group included the top three teams after two rounds Humber (1st place) Durham College (Oshawa 2nd place) and Camosun College (Victoria B.C. 3rd place) would finish. The results would not favor Niagara as both Durahm and Camosun would finish strong in their final rounds.
Humber College
captured the gold medal with a team total score of 879, Silver went
to Camosun with a total score of 897, and Durham with the bronze
finishing six strokes ahead of the Knights at 901.
Like his teammates, Robert Ellis (St. Catharines) had his best
round of the Championship shooting a team low 218 to finish just
one stroke behind the gold medal winner Coltan Kalkanis (Georgian
College) in the men’s individual competition. Ellis who
finished with a birdie on the par 3 18th shot a 2-under
70 in his final round which was the best score of the day on the
men’s side. He came home with the silver medal while Kalkanis
captured the overall title with a score of 219. Ellis was also a
member of the CCAA Championship All tournament team.
Individually the Knights had opportunities to close the gap on the three leaders as they all came around to the 10th hole just one over par with the exception of Ellis who was even. The back nine would once again prove to be the Knights nightmare as they would shoot a 13 over par. Ellis would be the team leader in scoring with a total of 218 just 2 strokes over par. Walker Arnott was 9 over par 225, Cole Kent was third at 16 over par 232, Chad Currie was in forth with a 19-over par 235, and Lukas Jakobs fifth shooting 23 over par 239.
