2012 Knights Golf Team Honoured

The Niagara Knights men's golf team officially wrapped up their 2012 season on Thursday, November 15th at the Welland campus athletic centre. The Knights were formally honoured by the Niagara College Department of Athletics and Recreation at half-time of the men's basketball game.

Manager of Athletics Matthew Davies was on hand to present all five team members and team Head Coach Jim Briggs with gift certificates in appreciation of the Knights' strong season.

The 2012 season saw the Knights earn the OCAA Division One bronze medal on October 3rd at the Roseland Golf and Curling Club in Windsor, Ontario.

The Knights finished with a team score of 888 including a final round best 291 to capture the bronze. The Knights finished three strokes ahead of fourth place Seneca.

Humber College finished with a team score of 874 to capture the gold medal, while Georgian College shot an 877 to earn the silver.

The bronze medal finish in Windsor, earned the Knights a trip to the 2012 Ping CCAA National Golf Championships at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club.

The Knights played some of their strongest golf of the season, shooting an incredible final round of 298, finishing in fourth place just six strokes behind the bronze medal winning Durham Lords. Camosun College went on to win the silver medal, while Humber captured the gold.

Leading the way for the Knights was second year Civil Engineering student Robert Ellis. The St. Catharines, Ontario native shot a tournament low final round 70.  Ellis finished with a 2-over total of 218, good enough to earn the men's individual CCAA silver medal.

Ellis finished the event just one stroke behind CCAA gold medalist Colton Kalkanis of Georgian College.

The silver medal earned Ellis a spot on the CCAA All-Tournament team, to go along with his selection as an OCAA All-Ontario team member.

First year Professional Golf Management student Walker Arnott was also named to the 2012 OCAA All-Ontario team.

Looking towards next season, the Knights are eligible to return all 5 of this year's team members, and Head coach Jim Briggs thinks his team can continue to develop and can again contend for a medal at the 2013 CCAA National Championships being held at the Royal Quebec Golf Club.
