OAKVILLE, ON: Your Niagara Knights (7-2-1) ended the season with a 1-0 victory over the Sheridan Bruins (4-6).
Heading up the highway for an afternoon match, the Niagara Knights looked to end their season on a high note. Fans who either made the drive up to Oakville or watched live online were not disappointed after an evenly matched game eventually saw the Knights cash another goal late in the game. In the 83rd minute, after drawing a free kick from about 25 yards out, Cienna Toromoreno sent a ball towards goal that was initially punched up by the Bruins goalkeeper but eventually found the head of Sara Vogel, the 1st year Knight from Waterdown, Ontario, as she leaped above the crowd and headed the ball into the back of the net.
The win against the Bruins momentarily put the Niagara Knights into the #2 seed in the OCAA West, as the Knights watched the Conestoga Condors vs. St. Clair Saints match in anticipation to see how the standings would play out. The Condors led for most of the game, making Knights fans happy, until extra time saw the Saints capitalize on a penalty shot and tie the game up. The Saints tie ultimately pushed the Knights to the #3 seed as standings are finalized.
Rob Lalama, head coach for the Knights, said that "Saturday's win against Sheridan was a nice way to end the regular season. The team played really well, controlling possession and moving the ball for 90 minutes." Lalama, looking towards the playoffs, continued to say "we'll take a few days off and prepare Tuesday for our playoff game"
The Niagara Knights see themselves as the #3 seed heading into the playoffs to take on the #6 seed, Humber Hawks (4-5-1). The Knights have previously beaten the Hawks earlier in the season with a 2-1 final and hope to see similar results as they host Humber on Wednesday, October 16th at Youngs Sportsplex in Welland, Ontario – kick off is at 7:00pm. We hope to see Knights nation out in full force cheering on the ladies as they look to win the first-round playoff matchup. If you are not able to make it to the game, follow the Knights and watch the game live on YouTube.
