Knights Curling Teams Ready For Provincial Championships

The Niagara College Knights Curling teams will be participating in the 2011-2012 OCAA Curling Championships hosted by Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario from February 16-19.

Men's Preview

The Knights Men's team has won medals in each of the last four seasons, but has been shut out of men's team gold.

Last year, the men's rink won Bronze, and in the previous three years they won Silver.

Skip Brandon Halchuk (Hamilton, Ont.) returns, and will lead first-year players Cody Smith (Gravenhurst, Ont.) and Matt Service (Millgrove, Ont.) along with second-year player Kyle Damiani (Newmarket, Ont.) in an effort to break the championship drought.

There are eight other men's teams in the field for the four-day tournament.

Women's Preview

The Knights Women's team features only one returning player from last season - Tracy Carreau (Welland, ON). Last year, she was named team MVP and won the leadership and top academic awards. This year she is back as a Second on the Knights rink.

The three first-year Knights are Skip Katie Spanton (Sarnia, ON), Vice Melissa Borowski (Welland, ON) and Lead Nicole Gofforth (Innisfil, ON).

Nine other women's team comprise the largest field for the four-day tournament.

Mixed Preview

After not having a mixed team for the past three seasons, the Knights Mixed Curling team is back for 2012.

Lead Lauren Brush (Amherstburg, ON), who was on the Knights Women's team last year and named team Top Rookie, is the only player with OCAA Championship experience.

Skip James Holloway (Mississauga, ON), Vice Karen Aitken (Ridgetown, ON), Second Andrew Alderson (Welland, ON) and Spare Michelle Corner (Orangeville, ON) are all first-year Knights.
