Knights Men’s Curling Medal Streak Comes To An End

The Niagara College Knights Men's Curling team had their four-year medal streak come to an end at this year's OCAA Championship in Sault Ste. Marie this past week.

Last year, the Knights won bronze at the championship. Before that, they had won the Silver Medal for three straight years.

This past week, the Knights rink of Skip Brandon Halchuk (Hamilton, Ont.), Vice Matt Service (Millgrove, ON), Second Kyle Damiani (Newmarket, ON), and Lead Cody Smith (Gravenhurst, ON) finished round-robin play with a record of 3-5 and did not qualify for the medal rounds. Halchuk and Damiani were the two returning players from last year's team, with Damiani being named the team's top rookie in 2011.

The team dropped their first two games of the Championship with a 5-4 loss to Fanshawe and an 8-3 loss to Fleming (Peterborough). On Friday, the Knights rebounded to win two of their three draws. They would beat Mohawk 10-5 and Fleming (Lindsay) 10-1, while dropping an 8-1 decision to Confederation.

On Saturday, the Knights would lose 7-3 to the host Sault College Cougars, the eventual gold medal champions. Niagara would end their round-robin play on a positive note defeating Humber 7-4.

They would finish tied for 6th place in the field of nine teams.
