OAKVILLE, Ont. - West proved to be best at the 2013 OCAA Volleyball All-Star Games played last Saturday at Sheridan Institute of Technology in Oakville, Ont.
In the women's match, Team West needed four sets to defeat Team East 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-17, 27-25).
Humber fifth-year setter Nina Carino (Scarborough) was named player of the game in the victory, a key figure in helping set up 44 total kills for the West. She led all players with four serving aces. Humber teammate Kelly Nyhof (Georgetown) earned a dozen kills for a match-high 12 points. Curtiss Straatsma (Brampton) of Redeemer and Stephanie Bignell (Drayton) of Fanshawe also contributed six kills each.
Georgian's Natalie Buck (Keswick) was the player of the game for Team East, contributing five kills, one ace and one block for seven points. Cambrian's Shawna Metcalf (Azilda) contributed 10 kills and one block for a team-high 11 points.
In the men's game, Team West defeated Team East 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 28-26, 17-25). In the spirit of competition, an extra set was played between the teams.
Niagara's Shayne Petrusma (Bowmanville) was named player of the game for Team West. He led all players with 10 kills totaling 10 points. Nipissing's Frankie Edgecombe (Elmvale) added seven kills, one ace and one block for nine points.
Team East's player of the game was Durham's Riley McAllister (Oshawa). He helped set up 43 total kills for his team, while contributing two kills and one block. Durham teammate Craig Lush (Port Perry) totaled a team high nine points on seven kills and two blocks, while Keith Marier (Ottawa) of La Cite earned a team-high eight kills.
The 20th annual all-star games brought together the elite collegiate volleyball players from across the province for a day of camaraderie and competition. Over 50 student-athletes represented 21 Ontario colleges and universities at this event.
