Andy Hein and Lorelle Weavers Named Athletes of the Week

New for 2014, all Niagara College Athletes of the week will receive a free lunch special at either the Core or Armoury student centre courtesy of the Niagara College Student Administrative Council.

Male Athlete of the Week – Andy Hein, Men’s Soccer/Cross Country

Andy Hein a dual sport with Niagara College men’s soccer and cross country programs has been selected as this week’s SAC male athlete of the week. Hein recorded a goal during Knights men’s soccer victory over the Mohawk Mountaineers and had the best finish to date for the Niagara College cross country program (12th place) at the Seneca College meet this weekend.

Hein (Omemee) is a second year striker with the Knights men’s soccer program and is competing during the Knights inaugural cross country season. He is a graduate of I.E. Weldon Secondary School and is currently enrolled in the Broadcasting, Radio, Television, and Film program at Niagara College.

"There isn't a person watching any of our games who wouldn't appreciate Andy's efforts. He has been a big factor in our success this season. He has a second and third gear than some teams can't adjust to."” said men’s soccer head coach Frank DeChellis. “He runs to our off site training facility and then runs home after training. I was not surprised to learn that he wanted to add cross country to his co-curricular life at Niagara College.”

Hein and the rest of the Niagara College men’s soccer program will open the 2014 OCAA playoffs on Saturday, October 11th when the team hosts the Redeemer Royals at 4:00pm at Youngs SportsPlex.

Female Athlete of the Week – Lorelle Weavers, Golf

For the third consecutive week, Lorelle Weavers of the Niagara College women’s golf team has been selected as the SAC female athlete of the week. Weavers captured the OCAA women’s individual silver medal at the OCAA Championships last week.

Weavers (Burlington) has had a tremendous 2014 season for the Knights. Winning all three invitational events she played in before capturing the OCAA silver at Wildfire Golf Club in Peterborough.

“Lorelle continued her run of top finished at the OCAAs” said Niagara College golf coach Cameron Thin. “She had a strong tournament and we will spend the next few days sharpening her game before heading the Quebec for the National Championship.”

Weavers is currently in her first semester of the two year Professional Golf Management program at Niagara College. She is a graduate of Lester B. Pearson High School, and spent the last two seasons competing in the NCAA with Chicago State University.
