WELLAND, ON: The defending 2023/2024 bronze medal-winning Knights women's basketball team showed up with an impressive win against the Sheridan Bruins, defeating them 67-34 Saturday afternoon. The Knights were dominant from the start of the game, leading 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and 35-10 at the half, holding the Bruins to only 2 points in the second quarter. Throughout the rest of the game, Niagara continued to show why they are one of the top teams in the OCAA, eventually ending the game and adding another win to the column. They now sit at 3-0 on the season.
Lexxus Bell (#10) led the Knights with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists, along with stellar performances from Eremwon Destiny (#7) and Janee Harrison (#14). Eremwon put up 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Janee made her presence known in the paint with 8 rebounds. She also stretched the floor, shooting (2/3) from beyond the arc.
Sheridan's leading scorer was Taliyah Copeland (#23), who came off the bench for the Bruins and put up 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. Taliyah played 24 minutes, which is tied for the most alongside Jamira Rousseau from the Knights.
Niagara showed its dominance over the Bruins both offensively and defensively. Sheridan shot 18.3 % from the field and 0% from behind the arc through the game. Niagara shot 32.4% from the field and 20.7% behind the arc. Niagara outrebounded Sheridan by 16, with a total of 52 compared to Sheridan's 36 rebounds.
The Knights look to continue their wining ways as they head to Toronto to take on the Humber Hawks in their second meeting of the season this Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1pm at the Humber Athletic Centre – North Campus.
