Knights Women’s Basketball Back on Track

January 24, 2025

WELLAND, ON: The Niagara College women's basketball team (11-2) returned home to take on the visiting Conestoga Condors (2-12) for a Friday evening match-up at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre.  The Knights, although starting off slowly, eventually pulled away to take the 64-54 victory.

The night started off looking like the Knights were in for another tough battle to secure another win, ending the 1st quarter leading by only 1 point.  The middle quarters were a different story where fans witnessed the Knights outscore the Condors by 7 points in the 2nd quarter and 8 points in the 3rd quarter, taking a 16-point lead into the 4th quarter.  Holding off a strong push from the Condors in the 4th, the Knights were able to come away with the 10-point victory.

After being held to only 2 points in the first half, Taryn Mitchell found another gear coming out of the break, finishing the night with a team high 15 points and contributing 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal in 23 minutes.  Aisja Strachan, the guard hailing from Nassau, Bahamas, came off the bench and looked like a wizard, leaving the defense to wonder what just happened.  Another strong night from Strachan saw her post a stat line of 13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal, while playing 25 minutes.

Head coach of the Knights, Kimbal Mackenzie, felt like this was "a good bounce back win after a disappointing loss on Wednesday [at Fanshawe]".  He added: "I'm proud of the girls for their resilience and togetherness during such a quick turnaround".

The Knights look forward to some much-needed rest as they get the week to prepare for back-to back games next weekend.  On Friday, January 31st, the Lambton Lions (8-5) come into town for a 6:00pm evening tilt with the Knights at the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre.  The next day, the Knights get set to take on the St. Clair Saints (4-8) for an afternoon matchup, with tip-off set for 2:00pm.
