Knights Women’s Basketball End Regular Season with a Win

February 5, 2025
WELLAND, ON: The Niagara College women's basketball team (14-2) welcomed the
Redeemer Royals (4-11) to the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre on Wednesday evening
for their final home game of the season. The Knights finished their regular season on a
high note, beating the Royals by 18 points with a final score of 67-49. The Knights
finish the regular season tied for 1 st place in the OCAA West division standings.
This final home game for the Knights was also senior night, where we celebrated 4
graduating student-athletes from the women's basketball team. Kate Roth, Griffin Lack-
Shane, Jamira Rousseau, and Janee Harrison all received commemorative plaques and
some words of recognition from their head coach prior to the start of the game. Coach
Mackenzie also started each of his graduating athletes and each played a minimum of
20 minutes in this game – a nice touch for his senior players.
Redeemer started off strong in the first quarter scoring 16 to Niagara's 20 points, and it
looked like they were going to give Niagara a run for their money. The second quarter
is where the Knights really took over the game, scoring 25 points to the Royals' 10 and
carrying a 19-point lead into the halftime break.
The 2nd half of this game saw every rostered Niagara athlete on the floor at one point or
another. The points were spread across the board with 9 different Knights counting
baskets for their team. The Royals tried to dwindle the lead, but ultimately it was too
large at the half and the Niagara roster was deeper and more enduring than the Royals
could handle.
Janee Harrison, the 4th year forward from St. Catharines, ON, carded 16 points, 3
rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, and 1 block in 22 minutes. The 3 rd year center out of
Kippen, ON, and graduating senior, Kate Roth, also had a great game scoring 8 points
and 7 rebounds in 20 minutes. 2 nd year Destiny Paquin of Welland, ON was another
strong presence on the court for the Knights tallying 9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and
2 blocks.
When asked about his team and this final game of the season, coach Mackenzie shared
that he is "proud of the group for finishing off the regular season on a high note". When
asked about his seniors he gushed "senior night was a special way to honour a class
that has made major contributions to the program over the last few years".
The Knights will now have some time to rest, recover, and start thinking about their
playoff picture as OCAA regular season play wraps up officially on Sunday, February 9th .
The team will host a home playoff game on Saturday, February 15th at 1pm with the
opponent still to be confirmed.
