RECAP: Knights season concludes with playoff loss to Cambrian

The Niagara Knights women's soccer program's season came to a conclusion on October 21st in Sudbury as the Knights fell 2-0 to the Cambrian Golden Shield. It was a disappointing finish to what was one of the best women's soccer campaigns in program history.

Entering the match, the Knights knew they had a tough task ahead against a Cambrian squad that featured the province's leading scorer in Tiffany Johnson. The Knights were up to the task for the majority of the game, limiting Johson to a pair of goals. THe first, in the 62nd minute of the match, came off a penalty kick while the second was in trasition in the 90th minute as the Knights were presseing forward looking for an equalizer.

Despite the disappointing end to the season, Head Coach Frank Dechellis heaped praise upon his team's effort in cold conditions on an unfamiliar pitch. "Shannon Halliday (Welland) put in a full days work, and her best game of the year in shutting her opponent (Johnson) down" said DeChellis.

"Our game plan was designed collaboratively with our players input," added Dechellis. "They executed it to perfection, with their only two markers coming on a penalty kick and late while we were pressing." On a team loaded with young players, the Knights brought one of their best efforts.

It was a emotional end for a team that left it all on the field. "These girls brought everything we worked on and learned this season into this game," DeChellis said, "Our final huddle as a team was very emotional, coaches included, and it took us a few minutes to break it up and go shake hands with Cambrian."

The Knights will now have another off season to prepare for the challenge that lies ahead with the 2017-18 OCAA season.
