RECAP: Unable to overcome slow start, Niagara drops home opener to Huskies

It wasn't the start that the Niagara Knights men's soccer program (0-1, 5th OCAA Central) had envisioned to open the regular season. Niagara dropped a 3-1 decision to the visiting George Brown Huskies (1-0, 1st OCAA Central) on Friday night.

It was a disjointed start for the Knights, who found themselves down 1-0 off an early strike from the Huskies in the 12th minute. However the pace of the game would settle with the majority of play taking place in the midfield. Entering the second half ahead by a goal, it was once again the Huskies who struck early. After some sustained pressure from Niagara, the Huskies notched their second tally of the game off some nifty transition play in the 58th minute.

Keith Makubuya (St. Catharines) would respond quickly for the Knights just 6 minutes later, cutting the deficit back to one. Makubuya placed home a beautiful header on the back post on a Knights corner kick. The pressure would continue for Niagara, but it was once again the transition game of George Brown that would seal the contest. The Huskies recorded their third and final goal of the contest in the 80th minute, putting the game out of reach for the Niagara.

"We had an advantage in nearly every offensive category we track, with the exception of the score," said Head Coach Frank DeChellis. "The loss was tough to swallow. The sessions leading up to our next contest will take root from our experience on Friday night."

The Knights will look to get on the winning track when they welcome the University of Toronto Mississauga Eagles to Youngs Sportsplex on Wednesday, September 14th at 6pm.
