RECAP: Knights draw Bruins in pivotal division matchup

The Niagara Knights men's soccer program (3-4-2, 4th OCAA Central) played to a 1-1 draw against the Sheridan Bruins (3-3-2, 3rd OCAA Central) on the road Tuesday night.

Niagara drew first blood in the game, as Andrew Currie (Woodstock) converted an Aaron VanVelzen (St. Catharines) corner kick in the 62nd minute to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. It was the second goal of the year for the fiesty Knights defender. The Bruins would respond just 16 minutes later on a corner kick of their own to tie the game at 1 apiece, which is how it would finish.

Head Coach Frank DeChellis was once again quick to applaud the play of his defenders in the contest, specifically Connor Diacur (St. Catharines). "Connor has provided us 75 tremendous minutes in each of the last two matches," said DeChellis. "Connor brings a level of energy that lifts his teammates to new levels. He wins balls, tracks back quickly, and players a very fundamental game."

Sam Robson (Milton) was the goalkeeper of record for the Knights in the draw. Alongside Diacur, teammates David Fimiak (St. Catharines) and Quinton Leone (Niagara Falls) were terrific in supporting Robson.

Although the Knights have not officially clinched a playoff spot, they are extremely close. A UTM loss in any of the final three games, including one against Niagara, would secure at least one of the four central division playoff berths. Niagara also has a chance to leap frog the Bruins into third place.

Niagara's final regular season matchup will go against the UTM Eagles (1-5-1, 5th OCAA Central) on Sunday, October 16th in Mississauga. Should the Knights qualify for the playoffs, the date and time of their opening round matchup will be announced next week.
