Women's Basketball Earn Weekend Split

This past weekend saw the Niagara College Women's Basketball Program (4-7) travel to South Western Ontario for a pair of OCAA West Division matchups against the Lambton Lions and St. Clair Saints. The Knights earned a hard fought 69-66 victory over the Lions on Saturday, before losing 57-47 on Sunday to the 6-5 Saints.

The Saturday, January 12th matchup against Lambton marked the Knights first OCAA League game since December 2.  Niagara had a strong outing, shooting 42% from the floor and finishing the game with four players in double digit scoring.

The balanced scoring attack was the product of a dominant passing attack, quarterbacked by fifth-year guard Allana Arundell. The Knights recorded 22 assists in the contest versus 12 by the Lions. Arundell finished the game with a season high 15 assists, and also added 10 points.

Leading the way offensively for the Knights were Kaitlyn McPherson (16), Miranda Ross (15), and Shelby Johnston (14).

The Knights had little time to reflect on their victory as tip-off for Sunday's matchup versus St. Clair came less than 24 hours later.

Both teams struggled offensively in the contest, shooting under 25% from the floor, and failing to generate any offensive momentum..

The difference in the game proved to be St. Clair's ability to grab rebounds and capitalize on second and third scoring chances. The Saints outrebounded Niagara 56-35 in the contest en route to the 10-point victory.

The Knights were led offensively by fourth-year esthetics student Kate Montgomery. The Waterford, Ontario native shot 5 of 11 in the contest and finished with 11 points and four rebounds in less than 24 minutes of playing time.

The Women's Volleyball Program will get a few days off before returning to the Welland Campus Athletic Centre this weekend for a pair crucial two games against Northern Ontario opponents.

Saturday, January 19th will see the team host the Algoma University Thunderbirds at 2:00pm, before hosting the Sault College Cougars on Sunday, January 20th at 1:00pm.
