Connor Diacur and Lorelle Weaver named athletes of the week

Female Athlete of the Week – Lorelle Weavers, Golf

Lorelle Weavers of the Niagara College golf team has been selected as this week’s female athlete of the week. Weavers captured the Fanshawe Invitational event on September 19th carding a tournament best 76. The Burlington native was named Niagara College female athlete of the week four times during the 2014-15 season.

Saturday’s event must have felt like déjà vu for Weavers, as  the defending CCAA women’s golf national champion, opened her 2015 season in nearly identical fashion to a year ago, winning the Fanshawe event at Forest City Golf and Country Club. Weavers shot a 76 edging out Emilie Tyndall of Georgian who carded a 77.

“Lorelle is a tremendous player, student, and individual” said Niagara Knights golf head coach Cameron Thin. “She played a solid round to open the season this weekend, and looks ready to mount a strong defense of her national championship.”

Weavers is currently enrolled in the Niagara College professional golf management program. She will return to action on September 21st at the annual Knights Fall Classic being held at Hunters Pointe Golf Club.

Male Athlete of the Week - Connor Diacur, Men’s Soccer

Connor Diacur of the Niagara College men’s soccer program has been named this week’s male athlete of the week. Diacur played a key role in helping lift the Knights to a 2-0 victory over the defending CCAA national champion Sheridan Bruins. The win is the Knights first ever against perennial powerhouse Sheridan.

Diacur, is a native of St. Catharines and is a graduate of Sir Winston Churchill High School. The Knights shifted the second year standout from a defensive role to the forward position during training camp and the early results have been strong.

Diacur assisted on the Knights opening goal, setting up Keith Makubuya in the 18th minute. The second year sport management student also managed three shots on goal, and drew a team high 12 fouls.

"The only way to describe Connor's performance on Saturday was emotionally uplifting” said Knights head coach Frank DeChellis. “The boy took a beating today while wreaking havoc in his part of the field.  If and when Connor's scores, he should be ready to be at the bottom of a dog-pile from his teammates."

Diacur and the rest of the Niagara College men’s soccer program (1-1, 2nd OCAA central) will return to action on Thursday, September 24th when the team hosts the visiting George Brown Huskies at 4:00 pm at Youngs SportsPlex.
