OCAA Champions Lorelle Weavers and Evan Littlefield named athletes of the week

Male Athlete of the Week – Evan Littlefield, Golf

Evan Littlefield of the Niagara College golf program has been named this week’s male athlete of the week.  Littlefield capped off an historic season for Knights golf September 30, becoming the first Niagara College male golfer to be named a CCAA All-Canadian.

The Thunder Bay native won gold at the OCAA championships, winning the three day tournament (Sept. 28-30) by two strokes.  Littlefield’s +2 (212) helped Niagara capture an OCAA men’s team gold medal for the first time since 1975.

“Evan has been locked in all season long,” said head coach Cameron Thin. “He has become a true leader for this program and I am excited to watch him and the rest of the Knights compete at nationals in a few weeks.”

In three tournaments this season, Littlefield has won an individual title and one runner-up after losing in a playoff against fellow Niagara Knight Mark Wikkerink at the Knights Fall Classic.  Littlefield now has three OCAA medals in his career four-year career, including a 2013 OCAA men’s team bronze medal.

Littlefield and the rest of the men’s golf team will now head to British Columbia to partake in the 2015 CCAA National Championship being played at Chiliwack Golf Club from October 13-16.

Female Athlete of the Week – Lorelle Weavers, Golf

For the second time this year and the sixth time in her illustrious career, Lorelle Weavers has been selected as this week’s Niagara College female athlete of the week.  Weavers captured her first provincial title on September 30th, carding a tournament best +16 (226) and winning the tournament by four strokes.

Over two seasons with the Knights, Weavers has won six of eight tournaments in which she has competed, finishing second in the two tournaments she did not win.  Already one of the most decorated student-athletes in Niagara College history, Weavers is now the first to be named CCAA All-Canadian twice during their respective career.

“Lorelle is an outstanding individual,” said second-year head coach Cameron Thin.  “Her 2014 season was absolutely incredible and she now has the chance to take it one step further.  Lorelle’s hard work has put her in this position and I could not be more proud of her.”

Weavers will now look to become the third straight female golfer to win back-to-back CCAA national championships.  The 2015 national championship will be held at Chiliwack Golf Club in British Columbia from October 13-16.
