Knights Struggle Against Royals in 62-57 Loss

January 19, 2023...WELLAND - The Niagara College Knights women's basketball team suffered a 62-57 loss to the Redeemer Royals Wednesday night at the Welland Campus Centre.

It was an ugly start for the now 5-5 Knights who found themselves in a big hole after the first quarter, down 27-12 to the visiting Royals.

In the second quarter, the blue and white  put together a 14–3 run to cut the lead to four 30–26 was just under two minutes left in the half. Redeemer closed out the half with back to back baskets to make it 34-26 after 20 minutes.

To open the third quarter, the Knights put together another 10-2 run tying the game 36-36 with five minutes left to play. The Royals, who scored just nine points in the quarter, held a two point lead, 43-41 to head into the final frame.

Early in the fourth quarter, Niagara would take their first lead of the game and hold a 47-45 lead, before Redeemer answered back with an 8-2 run to go up 53-49 with five minutes left. The Knights would tie it up 53-53 and again at 55-55 with just over a minute left in regulation.

The Royals moved ahead with just one minute remaining on the clock, knocking down two jumpers and one free throw to close out the game and secure a 62-57 win over the home team.

Taryn Mitchell led the Knights will 12 points on the night, while Angelica Lapensee followed up with 10 points and seven rebounds. Kate Roth led on the boards with 10 rebounds on the night. 

For the game, Redeemer shot 36.5% (23-63) from the field, 28.6% (6-21) from long range and 83.3% (10-12) from the free throw line. Niagara went 22-81 (27.2%) from the floor, 3-18 (16.7%) from beyond the arc and 76.9% (10-13) from the charity stripe. The Royals won the battle on the glass 52-38.

Next up for the Knights is a road trip to Sheridan (0-10) on Friday night. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm.
