Knights Win Third Straight

Knights Win Third Straight

The Niagara Knights women's volleyball team won their third straight game on Saturday, November 10th. The victory over the visiting Conestoga Condors moves the team to 3-1 on the season.

Knights' Head Coach Joey Martins felt that "Conestoga came out very hard and with a lot of energy, and we lacked some focus." The Condors played solid volleyball anchored by a very strong defensive team effort.

The teams split the first two sets by identical 25-22 scores. The Knights then won a tight 3rd set 25-21, until , according to Martins playing "sound fundamental team volleyball" in the 4th set earning a 25-15 victory.

Martins added that he was happy with how his team "didn't play great, but continued to fight and didn't quit."

The Knights main advantage in the game came from Nicole Schoonderwoerd and Alex Botelho, a pair of middle blockers.  The two players controlled the game at the net for the Knights, and prevented the Condors from developing any offensive momentum after the second set.

Schoonderword, a 2nd year Personal Support Worker student from Tavistock Ontario recorded 5 kills, 1 service ace, 3 stuff blocks, and 5 digs for the Knights. Botelho, a first year Recreation and Leisure Services student finished the game with 7 kills, 3 service aces, and 7 digs.

"It's great to be 3-1" added Martins. "This is where we want to be. Over .500 keeps us in contention for a playoff spot."

The Knights next game is scheduled for Friday, November 16th at 6:00pm when the team hosts the Humber Hawks at the Welland campus athletic centre.

Throughout the evening of November 16th, the Knights will be promoting pediatric brain tumor and childhood cancer awareness. The event is in support of the Team Kelsey initiative. For more information regarding this program please visit http://bit.ly//NrdZvo.
