Niagara Wins SLC Vikings Men's Basketball Tournament

KINGSTON, Ont. - Sunday was the last day for the 18th Annual SLC Vikings Men's Basketball Tournament. The Vikings entered the day losing their first two games to Niagara and Champlain College, and had to face a tough Georgian College team, that nearly pulled off a huge upset against 2011 Champions, Mohawk College.

St. Lawrence College head coach, Barry Smith got a much better effort out of his team against Georgian unfortunately they came up just short and lost 76-69. A major sign of improvement was the teams play in the second half as they scored 46 points, eliminating a 13 point lead for Fleming. In previous 2012-13 games the Vikings have struggled late to stay in the game. Terrance Thomas led the team in scoring with 20 points, and Sangee Martin brought down 10 rebounds.

The Seneca College Sting tipped off against the Niagara College Knights for the Gold medal game, with the Knights winning 83-78, capturing the tournament championship. At the half, Seneca was leading by 14 points, but Niagara would chip away at the lead in the fourth quarter, and with four seconds left Alex Cambell from Niagara would hit a clutch three pointer to tie the game, sending it to overtime (video link). The bronze medal game featured the George Brown College Huskies against the Fleming College Knights. Tournament all-star Bruno Silverstrin put up 22 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies for the 72-49 win.

St. Lawrence College would like to thank all the teams for participating, in what was another smooth and successful basketball tournament.
