PREVIEW: Knights set for road trip to George Brown for OCAA crossover match

PREVIEW: Knights set for road trip to George Brown for OCAA crossover match

A spot in the 2019 OCAA Championship is on the line on Saturday afternoon as the OCAA's ninth ranked Niagara Knights women's basketball program will travel to play the fifth ranked George Brown Huskies in their OCAA crossover game.

The Knights finished their season with an 11-9 record and landed in sixth place in the OCAA West. Their opponents, playing in the OCAA East, finished the season in second place with a 14-3 record. There is only one spot available for the two teams so they will both play with their seasons on the line.

The OCAA crossover match will tip-off at 1pm at George Brown's Casa Loma Campus in Toronto.

Bridget Atkinson (Welland) will look to keep up her spectacular season, as she has so far put up a campaign worthy of a look for the OCAA Player of the Year Award. The former Ontario Univeristy Athletics (OUA) Rookie of the Year finished the season with 19.7 points per game in her first and final season with the Knights, the second highest mark in the entire OCAA. She also finished seventh with 4.3 assists per game and had 7.8 rebounds per contest.

Joining her in the Knights attack will be guard Hannah Baker (Thorold) who was second on the Knights with 11.2 points per game in her second season in a Niagara uniform.

As a team, the Knights finished the season with 62.8 points per game. Head coach Michael Beccaria, who credits his team as defensive specialists, will look to coach his team to do just that as they will look to shut down a Huskies' offence that scored 73.6 points per game. Defensively, Niagara only allowed 62.8 points per game, as they finished the season with 1257 points both for and against.

The last time these two opponents squared off was January 13th, 2001, when they played in the same division. Overall, George Brown has a 22-12 record against Niagara all-time.
