Men's Volleyball
This past weekend saw the Niagara College men's volleyball (3-2, 5th West) program secure two home victories and move their winning percentage over .500 for the first time this season.
Niagara defeated Cambrian College (2-4, 7th West) by a score of 3-2. The Knights trailed Cambrian after three sets but rallied together to pull off the victory. The set scores were 25-16 21-25 18-25 25-21 15-9. Third year outside hitter Ben Fillmore (Cayuga) led the team with 20 kills while setter Steve Stone (St. Catharines) had a game high 49 assists.
"Ben Fillmore took over [the match] in the fourth and fifth, and willed us to victory," said head coach Nathan Groenveld. "Aaron Vanderlugt played an incredible match as well, pulling this group with him; something as a fifth year guy he is capable of doing on a regular basis. His four stuff blocks seemed to all come at key times and his run from the service line in the fourth gave us some breathing room to finish it out."
Playing in front of the home crowd may have factored into the Knights ability to rally from behind and secure the win. "A great crowd was on hand for both volleyball matches and it was great to see the support we have from the community here in Niagara," added coach Groenveld. "A huge thanks to all the fans that come out on a regular basis and support Niagara College Volleyball, we are extremely grateful."
The men's volleyball program will host the Conestoga Condors (1-5, 7th West) on November 21st at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre.
