Female Athlete of the Week – Madison Morgan, Women’s Volleyball
Madison Morgan of the Niagara College women’s volleyball program has been selected as this week’s SAC female athlete of the week. Morgan helped lead the Knights to a big come-from-behind win over the Redeemer Royals on January 16.
Morgan is a native of Whitby and a graduate of All Saints Catholic Secondary School. The five-foot-nine outside hitter is in her second year with the Niagara College volleyball program and is majoring in Recreation and Leisure.
With the Knights trailing 14-15 and down two sets to none, Morgan stepped to the service line against Redeemer, stringing together five straight aces and bringing the momentum back to Niagara. “Maddi played a complete game and was instrumental in our big win,” said head coach Joey Martins. “She finished with nine kills, six aces, and three blocks. She also passed really well, leading us in digs with 16. A very solid effort.”
Up next for the women’s volleyball program will be a home game on Thursday, January 22 against the Fanshawe Falcons (3-7, 7th West). The Knights currently sit in third place in the ultra-competitive OCAA West with a 9-3 record.
Male Athlete of the Week – Jeff Scott, Men’s Volleyball
So far, 2015 has been a great year for Jeff Scott. After earning most valuable player and tournament all-star honours in the 8th annual Knights tournament, the third year outside hitter has been named this week’s SAC male athlete of the week.
On January 16, against the Redeemer Royals, Jeff Scott dropped a season-high 15 kills while recording his first twenty point game. “Whenever Jeff scores twenty points, we have a great chance to win,” said head coach Nathan Groenveld.
The pre-health science major is currently ranked eighth in the OCAA with 0.37 service aces per set. Up next for the Knights is a home game against the Fanshawe Falcons (7-3, 4th West) on January 22.
