Keith Makubuya and Mary Ingribelli Named SAC Athletes of the Week

New for 2014, all Niagara College Athletes of the week will receive a free lunch special at either the Core or Armoury student centre courtesy of the Niagara College Student Administrative Council.

SAC Male Athlete of the Week – Keith Makubuya, Men’s Soccer

Third-year striker/midfielder Keith Makubuya of the Niagara College men’s soccer program has been selected as this week’s SAC Male Athlete of the Week. Makubuya has served as a catalyst for the Knights all season including the team’s 1-0 playoff penalty kick victory over the Redeemer Royals on October 11th.

Makubuya (St. Catharines) attended Sir Winston Churchill before joining the Toronto FC Academy 2010. Makubuya eventually signed with ‘big club’ and competed with Toronto FC from 2011-2012.

Niagara College men’s soccer head coach Frank DeChellis called Makubuya a “great addition to our Program.” He continued “during Saturday's victory over Redeemer, Keith led by example in keeping the Knights playing their game and not losing patience against a Royals team that was determined to send the game scoreless for as long as possible. His play in the 120th minute was no less methodical and focused as it was in the 5th minute.”

Makubuya plays a key setup role for the Knights. He has directly setup nearly half of the Knights goals in 2014. He also sits in a tie for second in team scoring with three goals in eight matches.

Makubuya and the rest of the Niagara College men’s soccer program will return to action on Saturday, October 18th when the team travels to Ottawa to take on the Algonquin Thunder in the second round of the OCAA playoffs.

SAC Female Athlete of the Week – Mary Ingribelli, Women’s Basketball

Second year guard Mary Ingribelli of the Niagara College women’s basketball program has been selected as this week’s SAC female athlete of the week.

The five-foot-nine native of St. Catharines is a graduate of Governor Simcoe Secondary School and is currently enrolled in the Niagara College police foundations program.

During the Knights 72-65 home victory over the Durham Lords, Ingribelli recorded a game high 24 points. More importantly however, she recorded 15 points in the fourth quarter to help rally a depleted Knights side to the impressive come-from-behind victory.

Ingribelli and the rest of the Niagara College women’s basketball program will wrap up their 2014-15 pre-season on October 17th when the team travels to Barrie to take part in the Georgian Grizzlies Invitational.
