RECAP: Knights conquer Mountaineers in weekend matchup

The Niagara Knights men's basketball program (1-1, 3rd OCAA West) bounced back from a season opening loss to defeat the Mohawk Mountaineers 82-73 on October 29th.

It was a statement opening for the Knights, who carried a 10 point lead through the first quarter and a 20 point lead at halftime. Mohawk began to battle back in the second half, narrowing the game but the Knights were able to hold on for the victory.

Head Coach Keith Vassell was pleased with his teams effort, but knows they will need to rise to the challenge in the second half of games. "We had a strong performance in the first half," said Vassell. "In the second half Mohawk picked up their defensive play, and we did not rise to the challenge."

Van Hutchinson Jr. (Nassau, Bahamas) led the way for Niagara with 24 points and 7 rebounds. Lequan Hylton (Mississauga) and Jordan Wilson (Nassau, Bahamas) both reached double digits, recoding 13 points apiece.

"I am happy with how we played today," added Vassell "Mohawk is a tough place to play, so we will take the win and keep moving forward." The coach also singled out the play of Hutchinson Jr thus far in the young season. "Van showed himself to be one of the more exciting players in the OCAA today."

Niagara fans will get their first regular season look at Hutchinson Jr. and his teammates at the 2nd Annual Blue & White Home Opener on Thursday, November 3rd. The Humber Hawks will visit the Welland Campus Athletic Centre for an 8pm tipoff. Student tickets are currently available at the Athletic Centre welcome desk in Welland. Tickets for all the game can be purchased at the door for $5.00 while students and those under the age of 17 are admitted free.
