McCabe and Morrison named Athletes of the Week

Female Athlete of the Week – Alyssa McCabe, Women’s Basketball

Niagara Falls native Alyssa McCabe of  the Niagara Knights women’s basketball program has been named this week’s female athlete of the week.

The veteran fourth-year point guard scored season highs in both points (17) and rebounds (7) during her teams impressive 77-53 victory over the Redeemer Royals on January 18th. The victory moved the Knights to 7-4 and into fourth place in the competitive OCAA West division.

“Alyssa has been great for us all season” said Knights head coach Mike Beccaria. “She has an ability to control a game, and is a real leader for us on the floor.”

The graduate of A.N. Myer Secondary school is averaging 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists per game for the OCAA No. 6 ranked Knights. The team has a busy week, as they travel to Etobicoke to face the CCAA’s top ranked Humber Hawks on January 25th before returning home to host the Sheridan Bruins on January 27th.

Male Athlete of the Week – D.J. Morrison, Men’s Basketball

DJ Morrison of the Niagara College men’s basketball program has been named this week’s male athlete of the week.

“DJ scored 23 points for us this week, including making four 3-point shots, and leading our team to a victory over a strong Redeemer program” said Niagara Knights men’s basketball head coach Keith Vassell.

The five-foot- nine point guard from Scarborough was red hot during the Knights 84-76 victory, shooting a dominant 7-9 in the first half, before being rested and used sparingly to finish the contest.

Morrison is in his second year with the CCAA’s No. 5 ranked Knights, and his eight points, three assists, and three rebounds have played a major role in helping propel the team to an 8-1 record on the season.

The Knights will face two of the top ten teams in the Canada this week, when they travel to Humber to take on the 8-2 Hawks on January 25th before hosting the CCAA’s No.2 ranked Sheridan Bruins (9-0) at 8:00pm on January 27th.
