NEWS: Hutchinson and Bultje named Athletes of the Week

Male Athlete of the Week – Van Hutchinson Jr., Men’s Basketball

Van Hutchinson Jr of the Niagara College men’s basketball team has been named this week’s male athlete of the week.

The six-foot-four forward was dominant during the Knights January 12th home court victory over the visiting Mohawk Mountaineers. The Nassau native finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals, helping lead the Knights to the 128-109 victory over the reigning OCAA silver medalists. “Van played an outstanding, full, and well rounded game against Mohawk” said third year men’s basketball head coach Keith Vassell. Hutchinson is averaging team highs in both points (14.5) and rebounds (8.6) this season.

The CCAA’s number five ranked Knights return to action when the team hosts the Redeemer Royals on January 18th at 8:00pm.

Female Athlete of the Week – Amy Bultje, Women’s Volleyball

For the first time this season Amy Bultje (Chatham) of the Niagara College women’s volleyball program has been selected as the female athlete of the week.

The six-foot-one middle blocker helped lead the Knights to pair of weekend victories over the Cambrian Golden Shield and Boreal Vipers. Bultje finished with 20 total points over the weekend, and more importantly helped improve the Niagara Knights to 10-1 on the season. “Amy is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with at the net” said Knights head coach Nathan Janzen. “She had a really fantastic weekend.”

Bultje and the rest of the OCAA’s second ranked Knights will return to action on January 22nd when the team hosts the St.Clair Saints (8-2, 3rd OCAA West) at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre.
