The Niagara College men's volleyball program got back into the win column on January 29th when the team defeated the Conestoga Condors on the road three sets to one. The set scores in the contest were, 26-24, 25-28, 19-25, 25-14. The win moves the Knights to 8-6 on the season.
The Knights were boosted by a career best performance by six-foot-five outside hitter Andrew VandenBurg (St. Catharines). The Smithville Christian graduate finished with a dominant 22 kills and an ace, while hitting for a staggering 55% efficiency.
"Andrew was nothing short of outstanding today" said Niagara College men's volleyball head coach Nathan Groenveld. "He hit at an incredible efficiency, passed really well, was a force blocking, and played great defence. Andrew has been good all year for us and has played almost every position on the court, tonight he showed how impactful he can be."
Third-year setter Garrett Suderman quarterbacked the successful Knights attack. The Niverville, Manitoba native recorded a season high 49 assists in the match. Groenveld continued "Garrett ran a really effective offense, and gave our hitters great looks all night."
The Knights now enter the home stretch of the 2016-17 season in the thick of a playoff battle in the always combative OCAA West Division. The team sits alone in fifth place, two points clear of the sixth and final playoff spot. The team will host the division leading Fanshawe falcons (12-1) in a crucial home court matchup on Thursday, January 2nd. First serve is set for 8:00pm.
