Knights sweep weekend games against visitors from Sudbury

WELLAND, ONT:, The Niagara College men's volleyball team (5-1) bounced back this weekend after their first loss of the season defeating the Cambrian Golden Shield (3-4) 3-1 on Friday (Set scores were 25-19, 14-25, 25-22 and 27-25), then defeating College Boreal Viperes (1-6) in 3 straight sets on Saturday (Set scores were 25-17, 25-10, 25-13).

After a tough defeat in their home opener, your Niagara Knights came back to their home court with a vengeance taking two commanding wins to bring them to third place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) standings. Friday night saw everything go through the setter Carter Thurman who had 31 assists, 1 ace and added 10 digs defensively. While middle Ashton Nieuwets also had himself a weekend combining for 21 kills, 4 aces and 26 digs in both games this weekend. Yet on Saturday, first-year Gurtej Singh stole the show with his excellent hitting and service, leading to 2 kills and 3 aces in the final two sets. 

Head coach Steve Stone had their sights set on finishing this weekend 5-1 which they achieved. Coach Stone went on to say he was "proud of the boys this weekend and their fight. Going against Cambrian and coming back from being down in two sets is a huge show of character."

The Knights will look to make it three wins in a row when they welcome the St. Clair Saints (4-2) to the Simplii Financial Athletic Centre this Saturday, November 18th with the game scheduled to start at 4:00 pm.
